11. Sapphire – Fidelity
Sapphire, the stone for September, is considered to be the most precious and valuable blue gemstone. It is a stone of wisdom, royalty, prophecy and Divine favor. The Ancient Greek and Roman Kings and Queens were convinced that it protected them from envy and harm and that it guarded against witchcraft! It was a symbol of power and strength, and also kindness and wisdom.
The name is derived from the Latin word sapphirus. The Greek word sappheiros, and Sanskrit word sanipryan mean blue stone. Some even believe the name of the crystal was derived from association with the planet Saturn.
As a talisman, it was thought to preserve chastity, discover fraud and treachery, protect the wearer from poison, plague, fever and skin diseases.
Today, it is still considered a stone of wisdom and a royal stone of learning. It is purported to bring inner peace and to increase connection to and communication with angels. It stimulates the throat and third eye chakras. It is useful for calming the mind, allowing the release of mental tension and unwanted thoughts.
It is a stone of love, commitment and fidelity and has become popular for engagement rings.
